Rs 166 million Indian aid to prevent floods

KATHMANDU: Indian ambassador to Nepal Rakesh Sood on Tuesday handed over a cheque for Rs 166.3 million to Minister for Water Resources Bishnu Prasad Paudel for the construction of embankments along Bagmati, Kamala, Lalbakeya and Khando rivers. India has also pledged to provide additional Rs 109.96 million for four other river projects. The Indian assistance has been provided as per the decision of the Nepal-India sub-committee on embankments along Bagmati, Kamala, Lalbakeya and Khando rivers. The Indian government had also provided Rs 165 million for these projects last year. The Indian government has already provided an assistance of Rs 151.2 million for these projects in this fiscal year. With this assistance, the Indian government's total grant aid for these projects stands at Rs 317.5 million. Ambassador Sood also signed four separate Memorandums of Understanding on behalf of the Indian government. India has pledged to provide Rs 109.96 million for the emergency protection works on Triyuga River in Udaypur, extension of the embankment along the right bank of Sunsari River, river training work on Lakhandehi River in Sarlahi district and river protection work on Kankai River in Jhapa. Secretary at the Ministry of Water Resources Shankar Koirala signed the MoU on behalf of the Nepal government. The construction work is being undertaken on the request of Ministry of Water Resources for implementation under the small development projects of the Nepal-India Economic Cooperation Programme. 'It will help control floods and save habitation,' stated a press statement issued by the Indian Embassy.
