Ki-moon warns of peace derailment

KATHMANDU: United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has warned that differences among major political parties could impede Nepal's peace process and hinder work at the parliament. The Secretary General's report scheduled to be presented at the UN Security Council next week has called nationwide public consultations on constitutional matters a positive development. The report also terms the relationship between major four coalition partners as fractious, underlining the need for leaders to work actively to generate public confidence, and a shared sense of national unity. It said the agreements made between the government and the parties concerned needed to be implemented to advance the peace process. The report added that the controversial decision of the government on the Nepali Army and frequent acrimony among senior political leaders had created an atmosphere of distrust which could hinder the integration process. Ki-moon noted that it would be challenging for leaders to address the demands of identity-based groups and to handle federalism.
