KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal today revealed a plan to establish four museums to showcase Nepali’s centuries-old culture. Visiting Nepal National Ethnographic Museum at Bhrikutimandap, the PM said the venues for the museums would be Bhrikutimandap, Narayanhity Palace, Gokarna and Nawalparasi. According to him, the museum at Bhrikutimandap will exhibit ethnic communities, the one at Narayanhity history of monarchy, that in Gokarna movements for democracy and republic, while the Nawalparasi museum will represent the culture and tradition of the Tharus. Ministry of Finance has been asked to work on the projects.Nepal also visited the proposed Sahid Park at Gokarna to commemorate the martyrs of the historic movements. NNEM claimed to have put on display ethnographic details of eleven communities — the Thakali, the Sherpa, the Tamang, the Gurung, the Rai, the Limbu, the Chepang, the Jyapu, the Magar, the Sunuwar and the Tharu. There are 70 ethnic communities in the country. The government has often been criticised for its neglect of the museums in the country. Dr Keshab Shrestha, chief, Natural History Museum, said, “The museums are in a sorry state.” NHM, the country’s only bio-diversity museum, was established 33 years ago. Dr Shrestha said it was still confined to a decade-old traditional building and added another indigenous museum proposed to be built at Panga, Kirtipur was awaiting the government’s nod.
