Kamaiyas to be rehabilitated

KATHMANDU: The government today decided to complete the remaining task of rehabilitating freed Kamaiyas, bonded labourers, within the next six months. The age-old social practice was ended in 2000, promising their rehabilitation. Accordingly, the tenure of Commission for Freed Bonded Labourers has been extended by six months, said Dambar Shrestha, Minister for Land Reforms and Management. Today’s cabinet meeting also decided to construct a landfill site to manage the Valley’s garbage at Banchare Danda on the border of Dhading and Nuwakot districts, said Shankar Pokharel, Minister for Information and Communications. The meeting sanctioned the appointments in state-owned media institutions and Guthi Sansthan. Journalists Bijaya Chalise and Shambhu Shrestha have been appointed the executive chairman and the general manager of Gorkhapatra Corporation, respectively. Journalist Kundan Aryal and Balkrishna Chapagain have been appointed as executive chairmen of Nepal Television and Rastriya Samachar Samiti, respectively. Litterateur and poet Amar Giri is the new chairman of Nepal Film Development Board, while Narayan Prasad Acharya heads the Guthi Sansthan as its executive chairman. Minister Pokharel said the next cabinet meeting, on Monday, would finalise the members of National Planning Commission and adjustment and transfer of government secretaries.
