No 1 Roger Federer and No 2 Lleyton Hewitt won in straight sets to advance in the Pacific Life Open. Federer defeated Gilles Muller 6-3, 6-2 to move into the fourth round and Hewitt beat Michael Llodra 6-2, 7-6. Taylor Dent upset Marat Safin 7-5, 6-4.

On the women’s side, Lindsay Davenport entered the quarters with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Viktoriya Kutuzova. Maria Sharapova survived against Colombia’s Fabiola Zuluaga, pulling out a 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 win. Kim Clijsters beat Russia’s Evgenia Linetskaya 6-2, 6-1 in the fourth round. Elena Dementieva of Russia advanced with a 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 win over Tatiana Golovin.
