KATHMANDU: Tension ran high in Gongabu and its adjoining areas on Monday after enraged locals disrupted traffic and shut down the bazaar throughout the day, demanding stern action against alleged child-lifters. They accused three persons of attempting to abduct a young boy last evening. Locals claimed they had saved two schoolchildren from abduction. One of the suspects was identified as Dawa Sherpa of Solukhumbu while others managed to flee. The situation took a violent turn today when irate locals severely beat up Dawa. Police had to fire teargas shells to disperse the mob. Dawa was rescued by the police and rushed to TU Teaching Hospital for treatment. The locals have accused the police of sheltering the suspects. They also clashed with the police, injuring over a dozen.
