KATHMANDU: Denizens of the Kathmandu Valley will have to separate bio-degradable and non-bio-degradable wastes at their homes from the current fiscal year. According to the recently released budget programme for the fiscal 2009/10, a campaign with a slogan of ‘Our City, Clean City’ will be initiated for waste management in the valley in coordination with other municipalities. The citizens of the valley will be encouraged to manage waste starting from their own homes, said Rabin Man Shrestha, chief of Environment Section, the Kathmandu Metropolitan City. Shrestha said the municipalities would pick up the waste materials from houses and take them to processing plants. “People awareness programmes on solid waste management will be carried out on a huge scale,” he said, adding that they would take action against people violating the rules in the later phase. Dr Sumitra Amatya, General Manager at the Solid Waste Management and Resource Mobilisation Centre under the Ministry of Local Development, said arrangement to separate the waste into different categories before its disposal from the houses will be made in a systematic manner. “Bins to dispose of the waste will be provided to every household,” said Amatya. “Separate bins for recyclable materials, non-usable waste and decomposing materials will be provided to every household,” she said. The government will also make provisions for the private sector to dispose of the garbage in a scientific way, said Dr Amatya. “They will establish compost fertiliser and other plants for disposing of the garbage.”
