KATHMANDU: Following their defeat in the election to the Constitutional Committee chairman, the UCPN Maoist is all set to begin “power exercise” claiming that its two main rivals — Nepali Congress and CPN UML — breached the agreement. Declaring that his party will strive for power — ultimate goal of the party — Dr Baburam Bhattarai, chairperson of United National People’s Movement (UNPM) of the Maoists, said, “As we’re in the parliament, we cannot form parallel government. But now we’re preparing to exercise power in an organised way . “We had suspended all the mechanisms of our parallel government following the agreement with the parties, but now we are forced to continue exercising it after the parties breached the agreement,” said Netra Bikram Chand ‘Biplav’, the general secretary of UNPM, adding that “thousands of our people were left in lurch after the parallel governments were dismantled.” At the local level, the UNPM will give guidance to the local government, he said, adding, “we will demand 50 per cent share in all state mechanism as per the mandate given by the people.” Today’s meeting, among other things, also decided to form local committees of the UNPM from village to district level in order to support all the daily works, including development projects and dispensing of justice. The front also decided to retaliate against the attack on its party cadres and leaders in different parts of the country.
