PM rescues would-be mom from jaws of death

KATHMANDU: Truly a benevolent act, or call it a compassionate gesture hitherto shown by any leaders ,Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal today rescued a woman from the jaw of death in Rukum. The woman was bleeding profusely. PM Nepal, who was in Nepalgunj, came to know that Kamala Chanda, resident of Musikot- 8 in Rukum, was suffering from labour-pain and was bleeding heavily. She would only survive four hours more if not flown to a hospital. The prime minister knew that the would -be-mother needed an emergency prenatal treatment at hospital in Kathmandu. Instead of returning straight to the Capital city to attend a crucial cabinet meeting, Nepal flew to Musikot, the district headquarters of Rukum, and brought Kamala to Kathmandu for treatment in the helicopter, according to Prime Minister’s assistant press advisor Suro Jang Pandey. Kamala is now undergoing treatment at the Maternity Hospital in Kathmandu and is away from any immediate danger. Physicians attending Kamala at the Rukum Hospital had given up hope as Kamala started bleeding heavily. The incident has also nakedly exposed how vulnerable district hospitals are, which could claim the lives of many pregnant women with minor complications. The fact that Rukum district lacks the air service and other transportation facilities brings horror to many more pregnant women who urgently require prenatal and post-natal cares. It was informed that former chairman of the Rukum District Development Committee Khem Man Khadka, had informed Nepal, seeking help to ferry Kamala to Kathmandu. The PM had responded to the plea immediately.
