A source of gratification could be many and varied and include ownership of land and/or property, being awarded a letter of appreciation after a tenure of service, or receive an honorary degree from a University, and the like. These enable one to embark on a self-promotion scheme, and, in short order becomes a thing to cherish. A certificate entitling one to a deed is a matter for joy and celebration, particularly as one has waited years for this to materialise. There is a feeling of elation which turns into a sentiment too strong for words. In effect, one’s long held desire comes to fruition where there was none before. A letter of appreciation for the hard work one has put in is probably a thing to welcome. And no one present in the ceremony is unmoved by the charged scene. The plain reason is that it is an award for honesty, diligence and for the term of work done in a befitting manner. Receiving an honorary degree of citation presumably has a lot to it than meets the eye. To be honoured thus declares an affirmation, achievement and accomplishment in a field. It is a token of honour for distinguishing oneself in the face of difficulties and even resistance. Thus, the recipient feels gratified because it carries weight, substance and validity of the awarding institution. Gratification in a sense means to be pleased about anything that comes one’s way and is not incidental. The person at the receiving end of a gesture, thus, feels an old fashioned delight. When this happens within one’s lifetime, there is more the reason to rejoice and share it with someone held in regard. Truly, it comes as a surprise and has an element of suspense and unpredictably. One can take this a step further and duly acknowledge it. There is nothing like being in full possession of one’s faculties on learning about it. It is an icing on the cake, and adds flavour to what has transpired. In an admixture of emotions, one becomes at once relieved and unnerved at such a prospect since it happens only once. So, the moment is to be lived to the fullest without taking recourse to the dull and monotonous. Thus, it makes for a heady experience that may defy all imagination. For, after all, it is to be accepted without any qualm, and in all good faith.
