JHAPA: More than 200 families, which were displaced due to the floods in various parts of Jhapa district this summer, warned that they would launch protests if authorities continued turning deaf ear to their compensation demand. People of 205 households residing in the near the Biring, Kankai, Ratuwa rivers were displaced in the floods that occurred in mid-August. The flood victims, after the rivers swept away their houses along with properties, have been living in wretched condition in makeshift shelters on public land. Laxman Pathak, a victim, vented ire at the government for turning a blind eye to their pitiable condition in the temporary shelters. According to him, an independent commission to look into the damages inflicted in the disaster should be formed and the victims should be compensated accordingly. They alleged that the ministers and other government officials spent a lot of money on visiting the flood affected areas but not to compensate the victims. Lokraj Dhakal of local chapter of Nepal Red Cross Society in the district, said, “The government should resettle the victims permanently by purchasing land.’’
