DHAKA: The Bangladeshi government on Sunday ordered an official inquiry into labour rioting that left two people dead and 100 injured at an industrial estate outside the capital Dhaka. Home Secretary Abdus Sobhan Shikdar said that a committee led by the labour secretary would assess the unrest, which erupted after workers learnt their factory had been closed while owing them three months’ unpaid salary. “The probe committee has been asked to submit its report in 15 days and we’ll take action according to its findings. We won’t spare the owners if they are found responsible for the incident,” he said. He also said the prime minister had demanded stern action against the rioters. Two people died after police used rubber bullets and tear gas to quell 15,000 workers protesting at the Tongi industrial area, 40 kilometres north of Dhaka on Saturday.
