BAGLUNG: UCPN-Maoist cadres today attacked the participants of a programme attended by Energy Minister Dr Prakash Sharan Mahat here. Shakuntala Sharma, district secretary, Nepali Congress-aligned Nepal Women's Union, was critically hurt in the assault. She is undergoing treatment in Baglung hospital. Five Maoist cadres were also injured in police action. ANNISU-R activists Rajiv Ghimire, Nirmal GC, Prashamsa KC and Mina BK are among the injured. Minister Mahat, who is on his way to inspect the Modikhola Hydel Project in Parbat, had reached Baglung to meet party cadres. The former rebels hurled stones at the minister after showing him black flags. They also vandalised the vehicle used by the minister. Hotel Peace Palace, where the programme was held, was also vandalised due to the rain of stones. Following the incident, the cadres have called a Baglung bazaar bandh, protesting 'police high-handedness in their peaceful agitation'. Infuriated Maoist cadres also vandalised NC party office and burned the party flag. NC district secretary Dipendra Thapa condemned the incident. Talking to mediapersons after the incident, Minister Mahat said the UCPN-Maoist had adopted anarchy in the name of 'civilian supremacy'. He termed the Maoist obstruction of the constitution writing process injustice to the people. The energy minister said the country's power problem would be solved within next four years and added the government would reduce cut in electricity supply gradually. "We will address power deficit even by importing electricity from India," he said.
