Hyatt Regency Kathmandu presented ‘Who let the Das out?’, a stand-up comic show featuring Chicago-based actor Vir Saran Das on January 24. Supported by The Himalayan Times, Das’ second show in Kathmandu was a fantastic evening of laughter with great food.
The audience this time was a more international mix so Vir Das decided to trot around the world with his decisively humorous way of looking at things. A strictly adult show, Das, a self-acknowledged expert in profanity, was very funny indeed. Spontaneously dealing with unexpected situations like the lights going out, a little more than an hour of listening to his jokes wasn’t enough.
For those who missed his show this time, you really did miss something because Vir Das had a different routine. Maybe a joke or two that you’d heard before but when delivered differently, they acquired another flavour altogether. Staying upbeat and in touch with the current affairs, Das picked on Michael Jackson (“a black boy who grew into a white woman), George Bush (guess why it’s the “year of the monkey?”), the Chinese New Year (the year of the monkey again — “24/01/Monkey”), the Indian innovativeness, India and Pakistan, models and their food habits, why models make perfect girlfriends (“they hardly eat and always look good”), Das’ search for his “perfect girl” and more.
Present at the show were various dignitaries, ambassadors and theatre enthusiasts. Running out of breath as he jumped from one joke to another, Das received a standing ovation.
