ANNIFSU national general convention beginning today

Kathmandu, February 10

The three-day 22nd national general convention of All Nepal National Free Students Union, student wing of ruling CPN-UML, is beginning from tomorrow at Bhrikuti Mandap, Kathmandu.

According to ANNFSU, CPN-UML Chairperson and Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli will inaugurate the general convention. Similarly, other senior leaders of the party such as Madhav Kumar Nepal, Jhalanath Khanal, Bam Dev Gautam, Ishwor Pokharel, among others, will also address their cadres during the inaugural session.

The general convention, which was earlier scheduled to begin from today, was postponed after the demise of Nepali Congress president and former Prime Minister Sushil Koirala.

Most of the convention representatives have already arrived in Kathmandu to take part in the convention.

ANNFSU chairperson Kishor Bikram Malla said around 1,550 convention representatives will participate in the convention.

He said they have prohibited use of huge pamphlets, banners and other promotional materials for the general convention. In the past, cadres contending for top posts spent a lot of money in promotional activities.

“Candidates contending the election, however, will be allowed to print small pamphlets and visiting cards, and meet cadres to seek votes,” he said. “If anyone is found to be seeking votes by luring the convention representatives and violating the convention code of conduct, their nominations will be scrapped,” he added.

ANNFSU has allocated Rs 5.5 million to conduct the national general convention.

The national general convention will elect a president, four vice presidents and a general secretary through open competition.

Similarly, out of seven secretaries, four secretaries will be elected through open competition, while the remaining three will be nominated.

Apart from this, chiefs of three committees, 17-member standing committee and a 141-member central committee will be elected during the convention.

Currently, two panels close to Prime Minister Oli and senior leader Madhav Kumar Nepal are contending for ANNFSU leadership.

Nabina Lama from Oli panel and Deepak Gautam from Nepal panel are contending for the post of chairperson.
