Baisakh 24 to be observed as National Press Day

Kathmandu, February 21

The government has begun preparations for observing Baisakh 24 as the National Press Day.

Baisakh 24 in the history of Nepali press commemorates the publication of the first newspaper Gorkhapatra published by the Gorkhapatra Corporation.

A meeting held under the coordination of Officiating Secretary at the Ministry of Information and Communications Eknarayan Aryal decided to observe the National Press Day to commemorate the day the Gorkhapatra was first published.

The decision to this effect was taken on the recommendation of the ministry and media experts.

President of the Federation of Nepali Journalists Mahendra Bista said the FNJ welcomed the government’s decision to observe Baisakh 24 as the National Press Day.

Press Council Nepal Chair Borna Bahadur Karki, joint secretaries at the Ministry of Information and Communications Ramchandra Dhakal and Raghuram Bista, National News Agency General Manager Nirmala Acharya, Radio Nepal Executive Director Suresh Kumar Karki, Gorkhapatra General Manager Sushil Koirala, Nepal Television General Manager Laxman Humagain and freelancer journalist Dhrubahari Aryal were present at the meeting.
