Brahma Shamsher's book on 1934 Nepal earthquake republished

KATHMANDU: New edition of the historical book Nepal ko Mahabhukampa 1990 (The Great Earthquake of Nepal, 1990 BS), which attracted general people's attention in wake of the devastating April 25 earthquake, has been published.

The book by Brahma Shamsher has collected details of losses in the 1934 magnitude-8.4 earthquake and relief and reconstruction works carried out in its aftermath.

The 1934 quake is the greatest ever earthquake recorded in Nepal so far. The book was first published few years after that.

Publication Nepalaya brought out fourth edition of the book in coordination with Sahayogi Press, which had published third edition of the book three decades ago upon a request by the author himself.

Meanwhile, Nepalaya and Sahayogi Press donated Rs 100,000 to the Prime Minister Disaster Relief Fund, to mark publication of the new edition, according to Nepalaya.

In addition to details of the quake losses, the author has recommended a number of measures to protect people from the quake.

Veteran culture expert Satya Mohan Joshi, survivor of both 1934 and 2015 quakes, has written a foreword to fresh edition of the book.

"We suffered a huge loss again," Joshi has highlighted, "also because we ignored such an important book which had compiled all related government documents about the quake."

In addition to the original edition, the new edition has a speech from the then Prime Minister Juddha Shamsher, delivered after four years of the quake.

The book is priced at Rs 275.
