Cyber crime threatens Kathmandu

KATHMANDU, August 5

Police arrested Bishnu Kumar Adhikari aka Sagar, 25, from Kathmandu yesterday for fomenting hatred and soliciting comments for and against a woman through the social networking site Facebook.

According to Metropolitan Police Crime Division, Sagar was involved in character assassination of the woman and sharing lewd messages through her Facebook account.

Similarly, police arrested Rahul Balmiki, 23, of Nepalgunj on July 8 for hacking Facebook accounts of more than 40 women and posting their obscene images as well as lewd messages on the social networking site in order to blackmail the victims.

Most of the women whose accounts Balmiki hacked were aspiring models. He is a choreographer by profession, while some of the victims are said to be his students. His intention behind the hacking was to blackmail the victims.

On July 10, police arrested Krishna Urau, 25, of Simariya, Sunsari, currently residing in Koteshwor, on the charge of mentally torturing one of his female friends by hacking her Facebook account and posting lewd messages as well as her contact number on the social networking site, on Friday.

Likewise, police nabbed Barun Thapa, 29, of Darjeeling, India, from Gongabu on June 27, for posting a woman’s objectionable video clips in various porn sites.

All the persons arrested in connection with cyber crime have been charged under Electronic Transaction Act, 2008. Any person involved in cyber crime is liable to Rs 100,000 fine or five years in jail or both under Article 47 of the Electronic Transaction Act, 2008.

According to MPCD, cyber crime has been posing threats to the personal security and dignity in recent times with growing number of users having access to Internet and social networking sites, especially Facebook.

MCPD has been facing a hard time to curb cyber crime owing up to the lack of technologies.
