Dr KC warns of fresh hunger strike

Kathmandu, August 19

Dr Govinda KC, an orthopaedic surgeon who has been demanding reforms in the medical education and health sector, today said it would be unacceptable to him if the Medical Education Bill is passed without incorporating the recommendations made by the Kedar Bhakta Mathema-led panel.

In a press statement released today, Dr KC warned the lawmakers against forwarding the bill in its current form. He said he would launch another fast-unto-death if the bill is passed without incorporating the panel’s recommendations.

“There is no point in bringing the act if anomalies in the medical sector are to continue,” he said.

Dr KC has been staging hunger strike time and again against irregularities in the medical sector. Among other things, he has been demanding that Institute of Medicine under Tribhuvan University be given the power to determine the number of seats and fee structure of medical colleges.

Dr KC who was on a fast-unto-death, postponed his strike on August 15, citing recent floods and landslides across the country.
