Expedite post-quake reconstruction works, NHRC tells government

Kathmandu, April 24

The National Human Rights Commission today urged the government to start reconstruction works immediately and effectively.

Issuing a 188 page earthquake monitoring report here today, the rights body recommended to the government to give special priority to those families who lost their loved ones in the natural calamity, orphans, single women, elderly people, disabled, deprived communities and people of remote areas in construction works.

The NHRC also said that the government should keep in mind the economic, social and cultural rights of the affected people while relocating them to other areas.

NHRC Spokesperson Mohn Ansari said although 700,000 people were displaced due to the earthquake, very small percentage of people had received Rs 200,000 for reconstruction.

He urged the government to expedite the reconstruction.
