Thapa seeks annulment of TU affiliation to KNMC

Kathmandu, August 24

Former health minister and lawmaker Gagan Thapa today registered a proposal of public importance in the Parliament, demanding that the affiliation granted by Tribhuvan University to Kathmandu National Medical College, Ghattekulo, be revoked.

Thapa said in his proposal that the affiliation given to the medical college was a matter of public concern as medical education was related to health services. He also claimed that the Tribhuvan University had misinterpreted the court’s order while granting affiliation to KNMC on July 27.

The Sushil Koirala-led government had decided not to grant affiliation to any medical college until the passage of the Medical Education Bill.  Thapa said the decision to grant affiliation to a new medical college was also against the agreements reached with Dr Govinda KC.

“This is why we wanted the Parliament to discuss the matter and instruct the PM to immediately revoke affiliation to the college and punish the guilty,” Thapa stated in the proposal. Discussion on the proposal, however, would depend the speaker’s discretion.
