Govt to hold all-party meeting on local body restructuring

KATHMANDU: Concluding that local body restructuring is not only a technical issue, ruling parties have decided that they would hold talks between and among various political parties before the Local Body Restructuring Commission would conclude its assignment.

At a meeting among ruling parties and the Commission today, Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal announced that an all-party meeting would be held to take appropriate decisions as the restructuring was largely a political issue.

Dahal assured that the parties would forge some political consensus within a week and issue directives to the Commission then.

The ruling coalition members including CPN Maoist Centre and Nepali Congress had organised the meeting today to urge the Commission to consider suggestions of political parties and not to rush for the report.

"We have set a calendar to hold local body elections by mid-April next year," Dahal said, "Thus, the Commission should continue its work."

The Commission's current deadline would expire next week.

At the meeting, the Commission Chairman Balananda Paudel had briefed the parties about the progress the Commission had made so far.
