‘Guarantee rights of differently-abled’

KATHMANDU, July 22

People with disabilities have suggested that ‘none will be discriminated on the basis of disability’ be mentioned in the fundamental rights of the new constitution.

At a programme organised by the National Federation of the Disabled Nepal (NFDN) n the capital city on Wednesday, speakers demanded reservation for the disabled persons in the House of Representatives, provincial assembly and federal assembly. Persons with disabilities should be mentioned in case of indigenous people and Madhesis also, they said. Sudarshan Subedi, Chairman, National Federation of the Disabled Nepal, people with disabilities had played significant roles in political movements in the past, while many were became disabled while participating in those struggles. So, the demands of the people with differently-able are genuine, he argued.

CPN-UML Secretary Yogesh Bhattarai said the state needs to provide special protection to the differently-abled people. He pledged that he would make utmost efforts from his side to guarantee the rights of people with disabilities. Nepali Congress leader Prakash Sharan Mahat said demands raised by the differently-abled people must be heeded.
