NHRC chair defends Ansari’s statement

Kathmandu, April 10

Chair of National Human Rights Commission Anup Raj Sharma today issued a press statement defending NHRC member Mohna Ansari’s statement at the UPR session in Geneva recently.

NHRC chair’s statement comes on the heels of media reports that Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli expressed his displeasure against the statement delivered by Ansari at the UPR session.

Sharma said what Ansari said at UPR session in Geneva was not her personal but the commission’s views.

He said the commission’s attention had been drawn to news reports about prime minister’s discussion with chair and office bearers of NHRC regarding its official statement at UPR session in Geneva.

“The commission draws the attention of the stakeholders that the statement delivered by NHRC Spokesperson Mohna Ansari at the UPR session was that of the commission and not her own and the commission also wants to state that all bodies and office bearers should know that nobody is above the law and impunity has affected   the overall promotion and protection of human rights,” Sharma said in the statement.
