NHRC officials, Tharu lawmakers meet

KATHMANDU: National Human Rights Commission (NHRC)'s Chairperson Anup Raj Sharma on Monday said that the national rights watchdog would not make any compromise in the issues of human rights.

Expressing grief over the loss of lives and properties recently in Kailali and other districts, Sharma stressed that the law and order should be maintained in the country and security be ensured.

He was speaking to a group of Tharu lawmakers --Surendra Chaudhary, Ramrajan Chaudhary, Tejlal Chaudhary, Janakraj Chaudhary, Aman Modi and Gopal Dahit-- who went to meet the NHRC officials today.

During the meeting, the lawmakers drew the NHRC's attention towards mobilisation of army in various districts and imposition of curfew in the name of containing the situation. According to them, situation of human rights was worsening in the districts.

According to them, Tharu women were manhandled, youths were forced to flee their villages and many were framed or charged falsely and local administration stayed mute when houses of Tharu people, including lawmakers, were vandalised or set ablaze during curfew hours also in Kailali following the Tikapur incident.

Charging that the administration was not dealing with the issue fairly, the lawmakers urged the NHRC to help hold a multi-party dialogue in order to peacefully resolve the crisis.

In response, Sharma acknowledged that the people should be allowed to hold assemblies peacefully, raise their concerns, and live freely and fearlessly and human rights should be protected at any cost.

The visiting lawmakers said that the new constitution should address the concerns of marginalised communities.

Meanwhile, the NHRC also said that a number of its officials have been deployed at different crisis hit districts to inspect the human rights situation there.

According to the NHRC officials, a team of human rights activists in the leadership of NHRC member Sudip Pathak has been deployed in Kailali and other team led by another member Mohana Ansari has been deployed in Nawalparasi, Rupandehi, Kapilvastu and Dang.

Similarly, another team in the headship of NHRC member Govinda Sharma is all set to leave for Morang, Sunsari, Jhapa and Illam tomorrow to inspect the situation of human rights in those districts.
