Police arrest suspects in taxi driver’s death

Kathmandu, December 11

Police investigators said they have arrested ‘some suspects’ involved in the alleged murder of Raj Kumar Lama, 36, a taxi driver, who was found dead in Nayabasti, Gokarneshwor Municipality, on Saturday night.

Officials suspected foul play behind the death of Lama, a resident of Bhimeshwor Municipality, Dolakha district, after a ‘witness’ claimed that a youth had hit him with a brick at a local tavern the night he was found dead near Kumari temple in Nayabasti.

A suspect involved in the attack has been arrested. Police have not disclosed his identity, citing the ongoing investigation.

The Metropolitan Police Office has formed a probe panel led by SSP Sarbendra Khanal to establish if it was a murder. An official said some other suspects had also been held for further investigation.

An angry mob had gone on a rampage and vandalised the Metropolitan Police Beat, Nayabasti over the death of the taxi driver.

According to the MPO, Lama was found unconscious with head injury near his stationary taxi and died while being rushed to Stupa Community Hospital, Bouddha by their kin. He was also said to be overdrunk.

However, the kin of deceased have alleged that the death resulted due to ‘police brutality’ in custody. They have demanded a fact-finding investigation into the case.
