Post of registrar in three universities still vacant

Kathmandu, January 17

The post of registrar in three universities has been lying vacant since the past one month due to lack of political consensus.

The post of registrar in Far Western University, Mid-western University and Agriculture and Forestry University has been lying vacant since December 12.

Rectors and registrars are appointed by the Prime Minister, who is also the chancellor of universities, on the recommendation of vice chancellors.

The post of member-secretary in the University Grants Commission has also been lying vacant since the past few months. The Cabinet appoints member-secretary of the University Grants Commission.

Prof Bhushan Shrestha, vice-chancellor of Far-Western University, said registrars cannot be appointed without consensus between the political parties. “We have been holding talks with leaders to sort out the issue,” she said.

Rameshwor Upadhaya, president, Nepal University Teachers Association, said the post of university registrars and UGC member-secretary were lying vacant due to dispute over power-sharing between the political parties.
