Sadbhawana Party to quit CA today

Kathmandu, August 18

Objecting to the draft constitution, the Sadbhawana Party today announced that its six Constituent Assembly members would quit the CA tomorrow.

Leader of the SP Parliamentary Party Laxman Lal Karna said they were forced to quit because the Interim Constitution and the past agreements made with Madhesi parties were ignored while drafting new constitution.

Karna said their resignations would be handed over to CA Chairman Subas Chandra Nembang tomorrow. The party’s central committee has already decided that the party should quit the CA.

Chairman Rajendra Mahato told mediapersons that the party decided to quit CA, as it concluded that the draft constitution had terminated all the rights of the Madhesis, Tharus, Dalits, Indigenous nationalities, Muslims, women and all other minorities and disadvantaged groups.

The party has also decided to shift the party headquarters to Madhes from Kathmandu and convert the existing headquarters into party’s contact office.

Of the six SP CA members, only Sanjay Sah, who has been suspended for his involvement in 1 May 2011 Janakpur blast, was directly elected. Other members were elected through proportional representation system. They are: Shail Kumari Devi, wife of SP Chairman Rajendra Mahato; Bimal Kumar Kedia; Madhavi Rani Sah; Narsingh Chaudhary and the party’s co-chairman Laxman Lal Karna.
