Security forces on high alert ahead of statute

KATHMANDU: With just a few days to go before promulgation of the new constitution, the Nepal Police, the Armed Police Force and the National Investigation Department the Nepal Police, the Armed Police Force and the National Investigation Department have been put on high alert to thwart any subversive activity by the protesters.

The Constituent Assembly is scheduled to deliver the new constitution on September 20 and all three security agencies under the Ministry of Home Affairs have been focusing their attention on maintaining law and order and preventing possible violence.

Spokesperson for the Nepal Police DIG Kamal Singh Bam told The Himalayan Times that all three security agencies have been put on high alert and mobilised under the Integrated Security Plan put in place by the home ministry.

“There will be no compromise on security and all available human resources have been utilised effectively on the basis of threat analysis,” he informed.

The MoHA sounded high alert after various agitating parties and groups resorted to violence to pile pressure on the government and major political forces to fulfill their demands.

The government has designated some parts of the Tarai region, including Kailali, Morang, Saptari and Siraha as highly sensitive zones and deployed security forces accordingly. Curfew is still in effect in some Tarai districts.

Meanwhile, security agencies have issued a circular to all their units directing officials not to go on leave until further notice. The decree shall be applicable to all regional police headquarters, Metropolitan Police Commissioner’s Office, regional police training centres and district police offices.
