Deuba announces candidacy for Nepali Congress president

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress senior leader Sher Bahaur Deuba on Thursday announced his candidacy for the post of party president.

He announced his candidacy by organising a press conference in the Capital this morning.

Veteran leader and former general secretary of the party Kul Bahadur Gurung proposed Deuba for the top post and Khum Bahadur Khadka seconded the proposal.

"We need unity in the party. Unless we unite, we cannot solve the country's problems," Deuba said during the conference.

Deuba went on to say that he took major steps to address the concerns of the marginalised communities including Dalits, janajatis and Madhesis.

"I have ability to make wise decisions and courage too. I am ready to resolve the issue of demarcation of provincial boundaries," Deuba added.

Deuba panel named Arjun Narsingh KC for general secretary and Chitra Lekha Yadav for treasurer.

Yadav was elected to the post of treasurer in the last convention as well, while Deuba and general secretary candidate from his panel Bimalendra Nidhi had lost to Sushil Koirala and Prakash Man Singh respectively.

Earlier on Wednesday, two leaders of the establishment side, Ram Chandra Paudel and Krishna Prasad Sitaula announced their candidacies for the party leadership.

Paudel panel includes NC founding leader BP Koirala’s son Shashanka Koirala as general secretary. Paudel’s team did not name anyone for treasurer, while Sitaula had named Gagan Thapa for general secretary’s post and Umakanta Chaudhari as treasurer.

Though Sujata Koirala had announced her candidacy for the top post of the party yesterday, she withdrew her candidacy today and announced that she would lend her support to Paudel in the elections for the top position.

Now, Paudel, Sitaula and Deuba will vie for the top post of the party in the 13th general convention to be held from today.

Likewise, for the general secretary, Shashanka Koirala, Gagan Thapa and Arjun Narsingh KC are in the fray.

KC is the father-in-law of Thapa.
