'Smooth traffic in Kathmandu during Pranab Mukherjee trip'

KATHMANDU: Police said efforts were underway to ensure smooth traffic management during the visit of Indian President Pranab Mukherjee in Kathmandu from Wednesday to Friday.

Talking to the Rastriya Samachar Samiti today, Nepal Police spokesman Hemanta Malla Thakuri said a fear was seen in the mind of the people that the movement of other vehicles would come to a halt during the Indian President's visit, which he claimed was wrong.

"Public and private vehicles would be stopped only for some time when the dignitary's cavalcade is moving on the designated routes. The vehicles would be allowed to operate on the routes once the dignitary's convey passes," he said.

Thakuri made it clear that the traffic would not be stopped on the rest of the routes where the Indian President's cavalcade would not be passing.

The police have also urged the general public to use the alternative routes on routes where the dignitary's cavalcade would be operated.

Police spokesman Thakuri said the mobilisation of traffic police would be efficiently done so that the traffic management would not be chaotic due to the Indian President's movement around the town.

He said updates on the movement of the dignitary's cavalcade would be given every 25 minutes on FM 95.6 Megahertz radio operated by the Traffic Police during the Indian President's visit.

He urged everyone to plan their road travel based on this information.

Similarly, one can acquire information on the condition of the traffic by dialing 103.
