UML's Bhandari, NC's Gurung, NWPP's Maharjan file candidacies for presidential election

KATHMANDU: Three candidates -- Bidya Devi Bhandari of CPN-UML, Kul Bahadur Gurung of Nepali Congress and Narayan Maharjan of Nepal Workers and Peasants Party -- on Tuesday filed their nomination for the election of President at the Parliament.

The House is scheduled to elect the Head of State tomorrow.

UCPN-Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal is the proposer of Bhandari's presidential candidacy while Rastriya Prajatantra Party-Nepal Kamal Thapa, who is the Deputy Prime Minister in the CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli-led coalition government, is the seconder along with some leaders of other coalition partners.

Top leaders of ruling coalition, including Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, had reached the Parliament to register Bhandari's nomination.

Nepali Congress General Secretary Prakash Man Singh is the proposer of veteran leader Gurung's candidacy while another General Secretary Krishna Prasada Situala is the seconder.

Senior leaders of the Nepali Congress, including President Sushil Koirala and Vice-President Ram Chandra Paudel, had accompanied the party candidate to the Parliament for the nomination.

Nepal Workers Peasants Party leader Prem Suwal proposed Maharjan, who is a central leader of the party, as a candidate for the presidential election, seconded by Dilli Prasad Kafle.

The Parliament Secretariat will publish the final list of candidates at 3 pm today.
