US hails response to earthquake

Kathmandu, April 25

The Unites States has hailed the courage of the many Nepalis and Americans who provided assistance to those in need during and after the earthquake that struck on April 25m 2015.

On the first anniversary of the quake, the US Embassy in Kathmandu paid tribute to the six US Marines, two Nepali Army soldiers, and five Nepali civilians who were killed when their UH-1Y Huey helicopter crashed in the mountains in Dolakha during relief operations on May 12 last year.

The United States also offered its condolences to the families of 9,000 people who lost their lives and the more than 25,000 others injured.

In its response, the US government had extended assistance worth almost $130 million for relief and recovery purposes.

Right after the disaster, the US government spent no time in carrying out humanitarian response activities that included search and rescue deployments, emergency shelter, drinking water and food.
