47 districts submit reports to LBRC

Kathmandu, November 8

Local Bodies’ Restructuring Commission has so far received reports from 47 districts and expects to get all the remaining reports, except from eight Tarai districts, where Madhes-based political parties are obstructing the process, by Friday.

“As far as we are informed, we will get reports from all districts, except eight Tarai districts of Province No 2 by Friday. I, in the capacity of coordinator of Province No 2, will try my best to forge consensus among parties at the local level by Friday.

If we fail to forge consensus, the commission would take an appropriate decision,” said Sunil Ranjan Singh, a member of the commission.

Eight Tarai districts – Saptari, Siraha, Dhanusha, Mahottari, Sarlahi, Rautahat, Bara and Parsa – have been stating that they would allow the district level technical committees to work only after the issue of provincial boundaries was settled at the central level.

Madhes-based parties have been demanding two provinces in the Tarai since the Constituent Assembly promulgated the new constitution on 20 September 2015.

“The commission has so far received the structure of 430 local bodies,” Singh said.
