5 dead in Okhaldhunga tractor accident

OKHALDHUNGA: At least five people, including four minors, were killed when a tractor met with an accident at Ghorakhori of Okhaldhunga district on Wednesday. One person was injured in the incident.

Ferrying goods for a local health facility, the tractor (Na 5 Ta 2512) was heading to Bilandu from Ghorakhori when it fell some 500 metres down the road at around 4:30 pm.

Four of the victims were local children, according to police. Three of them were 15-year-old and the other was 14.

The fifth person who lost his life is said to be driver's assistant, who was behind the wheel.

Boarding the tractor, the children were apparently returning home from their school.

Identified as Hiran Bahadur Rai of Khotang, the assistant driver was driving the tractor on the mountainous road as the driver had apparently taken a break to eat food, according to preliminary information.

All five died on the spot.

The incident site lies northwest of the district headquarters and is close to Ramechhap district.

Twenty-years-old Prem Thapa of Phulbari was injured in the incident. He has been admitted to a local health post for treatment.
