Birgunj declared 'riot-hit' after violent clashes

BIRGUNJ: After violent clashes between the protesters and security personnel on Tuesday afternoon, local administration declared Birgunj, the district headquarters of Parsa, riot-hit zone for an indefinite period.

Four protesters lost their lives in police action after the protesters defied prohibitory order and attacked the security personnel. One person was shot dead in Birgunj yesterday evening.

The Chief District Officer of Parsa, Keshav Raj Ghimire, said that the decision regarding the riot-hit zone was made considering the security sensitivity of the district headquarters.

Earlier, the local administration had clamped an indefinite curfew as the agitation started turning violent.

One person died on the spot at Radhemai area when police opened fire at a violent mob this afternoon. Two protesters were fatally shot at in Laxmanwa. They died at the National Medical College.

Fourth person was hit by bullet during a clash in Nagawa when a mob barged into a police beat and tried to seize it. He was rushed to hospital where he died.

At least 30 people are said to have been injured in Parsa and Bara district in police action today.

Most of the injured are receiving treatment at the Birgunj-based Narayani Sub-Regional Hospital and National Medical College, and the Bara District Hospital in Kalaiya.

It has been learned that some of the critically injured were airlifted from Birgunj to Kathmandu on a Nepal Army chopper.

Arson

The police units in rural areas have been called back to the district headquarters following violent demonstrations.

Protesters set ablaze at least a dozen police facilities in different places today. Several motorcycles and vehicles were also burned.

A truck parked at Parwanipur along the Birgunj-Pathlaiya road was also set ablaze.

Likewise, the Birgunj-based Inland Revenue Office was also targeted.

A group barged into the government facility and burned some vehicles and documents there.
