Birgunj tense as protesters clash with security personnel

BIRGUNJ: Tension continued in Birgunj, the district headquarters of Parsa, as protesters clashed with the security personnel at Nagawa, Birgunj on Monday afternoon.

Security personnel resorted to firing several rounds of shots in air and lobbing tear gas shells to disperse violent protesters that marched towards prohibited zone.

At least one protester, identified as Krishna Kumar Patel, was hit by a bullet shrapnel and eight others were injured during the police action.

The injured were taken to the Narayani Sub-regional Hospital for treatment.

Chiefs of local security agencies are holding meeting after the clash.

Birgunj has remained shut for the 16th consecutive day as the supporters of Madhesi parties have been protesting the purported model of federalism and the demarcation of boundaries of new federal units.
