Bus skids off road killing 35, more than 35 injured

As many as 35 persons, including 12 women and 23 men died on the spot, when a bus heading to Chilime of Rasuwa from the capital met with an accident at Grang of Ramche VDC in Rasuwa at 1:00 pm today.

More than 35 passengers were injured.

Among the deceased, only four have been identified so far. According to District Police Office Rasuwa, they are: bus driver Bharat Gurung of Manakamana, Nuwakot; Deepa Chimoriya of Gadhimai-6 and Nima Tashi Tamang of Goljung-5 of Rasuwa; and Dhaibung VDC Secretary Tikam Bahadur Shahi of the district.

Of the injured, five each are undergoing treatment at District Hospital Rasuwa and Trishuli Hospital, Nuwakot. Twenty-five people who were critically injured 25 have been sent to Maharjgunj-based TU Teaching Hospital for further treatment, said Chief District Officer Shiva Ram Gelal.

DSP Abdesh Bista of District Police Office Rasuwa said the bus bound for Chilime from Kathmandu through Bidur of Nuwakot had skidded and fallen 200 metres below the road.

Those injured in the incident said the overcrowded bus had gone out of control before it plunged below the road after its front tyre was punctured. Some passengers travelling on the rooftop had jumped off the bus to safety.

Rasuwa CDO Shivram Gelal said security forces dispatched from the headquarters to the incident site rescued the injured. Army and Armed Police Force and Nepal Police personnel carried out rescue operation with support from the local people.

It has been learnt that more than 70 commuters were travelling in the bus. Locals said the body of the bus fell apart as it fell from a landslide-prone area.

Rasuwa police said efforts were under way to identify the deceased after the bodies were recovered.

The identities of all the deceased are yet to be established, police said. The tragedy has left the district in mourning. Local residents are flocking to the headquarters and the hospitals to inquire.

The incident site is 12 kilometres away from district headquarters Dhunche.

Ram Lama, a local, said that people were forced to undergo risky travel due to fuel shortage.
