Chunpahara cliff safe for climbers, say geologists

DAMAULI: Experts have declared Chunpahara, a cliff at Bimalnagar in Tanahun, Bandipur, safe allaying the fears of locals.

Following the locals’ concerns about the crack-riddled cliff and the threat it poses, a team from the Department of Mine and Geology had visited the site to assess the damage caused due to the massive earthquake of April 25 and the subsequent aftershocks.

After completing the danger assessment, the team comprising Surya Prakash Manandhar, Kumar Khadka and Pramod Simkhada returned to Kathmandu a few days ago.

The team has dismissed rumours about the safety of the cliff and maintained that the facility famed for rock climbing is safe and that the sport can resume, Rock climbing had come to a grinding halt after the earthquake.

Citing the team’s assessment, Siddhagufa Development Committee chairperson Lal Kumar Shrestha has made a clarion call tot tourists to visit the place and enjoy rock climbing and other activities.

Before the earthquake, daily around 150 people would visit Bandipur and its vicinity in order to enjoy various adventurous activities, including rock climbing and canoeing and visiting other historic caves.
