Cop shot dead in Bardiya

Nepalgunj, September 4

Two persons, including a head constable, were killed when agitators turned violent in Bardiya and Banke districts today.

Superintendent of Police Govindram Pariyar at District Police Office, Bardiya, said Head Constable Dev Bahdaur Pandey stationed at Area Police Office Mainapokhar, Bardiya, was killed when Tharuhat agitators hiding in a maize field fired at him when a police team from the area police office was clearing the road obstruction this morning.

Tharuhat agitators hurled stones at two buses en route to Bardiya from Nepalgunj escorted by the police at Mainapokhar.

SP Pariyar said police had to fire six tear gas shells to bring the situation under control but agitators hiding in corn fields started firing and a bullet hit head constable Pandey. Pandey was pronounced dead when he was admitted to Nepalgunj Medical College.

SP Pariyar said it was not clear which weapon was used in the firing. Police have arrested three persons suspecting their involvement in killing the head constable.

They are Abinash Chaudhary, Ramharsha Chaudhary and Naresh Chaudhary. In Banke, a bike rider was killed after cadres of the United Democratic Madhesi Front hurled stones at him in Piprawa Chowk of Ganapur, along Neplagunj-Kohalpur road today. Bike rider Karan Singh, 22, who was hit on chest, was rushed to hospital but he died during treatment, said SP Basant Pant at District Police Office Banke.
