Cops attacked during NC ward committee convention

Sunsari, January 29

Police personnel were attacked with khukuri during the Nepali Congress ward committee election in Dharan of Sunsari today.

Police head constable Jit Bahadur Baraili and constable Suraj Kumar Sah were injured when two youths, who had recently joined the party attacked them at the voting centre in a community forest in Dharan-19.

The injured cops are undergoing treatment at the Dharan-based BP Koirala Institute of Health and Sciences.

The attackers have been identified as Ajaya Rai and Barun Rai.

According to sources, the duo had rejoined the NC after quitting the Federal Socialist Forum Nepal. They had attacked the cops to vent ire at not being accepted by the party as active members.

According to local NC leader Subas Rai, voting had stopped for a few hours following the attack. Voting resumed after additional teams from Nepal Police and Armed Police Force reached the site.

Meanwhile, the party’s VDC and municipal ward-based conventions were halted today in Bara district.

NC lawmaker Radhe Chandra Yadav confirmed this.

“As the district election officer failed to turn up, we had no option other than to put off the convention for the time being,” he said, while another local NC leader said the elections had been postponed due to the ongoing agitation of the United Democratic Madhesi Front.
