Criminal activities drop across country: Police

Crime cases in the month of Asoj (mid-September to mid-October) has dropped to 2,034 as compared to 2,374 cases recorded in Bhadra (mid-August to mid-September.

The crime rate has decreased by around 14.32 percent. According to statistics maintained by Department of Crime Investigation of Nepal Police, the law enforcement agency arrested as many as 2,331 suspects in Bhadra for their alleged involvement in criminal activities.

Of them, 181 were female and 28 foreign nationals. Similarly, police brought to book 1,669 suspects, including 63 females and 24 foreign citizens, in Asoj.

As many as 49 cases of murder along with 54 cases of attempted murder were reported in Asoj as compared to 68 and 56 cases respectively in Bhadra. The number of suicides and thefts dropped to 368 and 122 respectively in Asoj from 666 and 158 in Bhadra.

The cases of organised and financial crimes is also said to have decreased in Asoj as compared to Bhadra. Police recorded 348 and 316 cases of organised and financial crimes in Bhadra and Asoj respectively.

Number of social crimes decreased to 859 in Asoj in comparison to 1,323 last month. Cases of crime against women and children have also dropped to 139 in Asoj as compared to 172 in Bhadra.

However, road accidents increased to 113 in Asoj against 90 such cases last month. Acute fuel crisis coupled with decreased people’s movement and pro-active policing has led to drop in crime rate in Asoj compared to Bhadra, a police investigator said, adding “We expect to further bring down the crime rate in Kartik.”

He added, “Though the hardship facing the country is unsolicited and Nepal Police is capable of tackling crimes any time, scarcity of essentials has led to gradual drop in criminal offences,” he said.
