Four of a Nepali family killed in India road accident

KATHMANDU: Four Nepali nationals were killed and three others were injured in a road accident on the Azamgarh-Gorakhpur road section in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, early on Monday.

The deceased have been identified as Navin Shrestha, his wife Anjali, father Gorakh Shrestha and brother Upendra Man. The three injured — Gorakh’s wife Shakuntala Devi, Upendra’s wife Rama Devi and car driver Vijay Ray of Gorakhpur — have been admitted to a district hospital, according to the Nepali Embassy in New Delhi.

The Nepali family hailing from Saraswati Nagar, Chabahil, Kathmandu, was en route to Varanasi from Gorakhpur when their car was rammed by a truck near Rajadepur village, said Bharat Kumar Regmi, deputy chief of mission at the embassy.

“Local police have told us that the truck fled the scene after welting the car and that they would soon get hold of it,” Regmi told THT over the phone from New Delhi.

The family had reached Gorakhpur via Sunauli on Sunday night, hired a Maruti Suzuki Ertiga car from a local travel agent, and rushed towards Varanasi the same night, according to navbharattimes.indiatimes.com. The accident occurred just after mid-night.

Regmi said the embassy was coordinating with local authorities to ensure proper treatment of the injured, and to transport bodies of the deceased to Nepal following autopsy and legal processes.
