Jaishankar meets PM, UDMF leaders
Kathmandu, March 15
Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli today said there was no political problem in Nepal and the government was committed to resolving any misunderstanding with its neighbours through dialogue.
During a meeting with Indian Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar today, the PM clarified that government was against letting anyone use Nepali soil against any other country, including our neighbours.
Jaishankar is in Kathmandu to attend the SAARC ministerial meeting in Pokhara and to meet leaders of political parties.
The PM said Nepal had entered a phase of economic development and expected support from emerging economic powers, including India.
He added that Indo-Nepal relations were strengthened following his recent India visit.
During the meeting, Jaishankar said India was confident about Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s decision-making ability and hoped for a timely decision to resolve Nepal’s remaining political problems.
He said India supported development and stability in Nepal, as that would have positive impact on India.
Jaishankar also urged the PM to move ahead pending agreements between India and Nepal so that both the countries would benefit.
Earlier during his meeting with the Madhesi leaders, Jaishankar told them to resolve the issues through dialogue, as India was for stability in Nepal.
Chairman of MJF-Republican Rajkishor Yadav said Jaishankar inquired about the government’s reaction to their demands and whether they were satisfied with the constitutional amendments.
Yadav said he also enquired about the United Democratic Madhesi Front’s further plans. Yadav added that Madhesi leaders told Jaishankar that they were preparing to launch a decisive movement across the country by roping in Janajatis and Dalits, as the government was not positive about their demands.
“The 14 parties in the alliance were preparing to extend the movement to different parts of the country,” Yadav told India’s foreign secretary.
He said Jaishankar assured them that he would take up their concerns with PM Oli.
He said Jaishankar cautioned UDMF leaders against launching agitation, as that would give ‘foreigners space to play against the two countries’.
Jaishankar also met former prime minister and coordinator of the New Force Campaign Baburam Bhattarai.
