Kavre quake victims await warm clothes

Kavre, December 20

Though winter has already set in, earthquake victims of Kavre have yet to receive cash relief of Rs 10,000 announced by government for them to buy warm clothes.

As per the sources at the Kavre District Natural Disaster Relief Committee, the delay in relief distribution has to do largely with the failure of the concerned VDCs and municipalities to submit details of Rs 15,000 cash relief distributed earlier to each quake affected families.

“We will release the amount soon, but only to those VDCs and municipalities that have furnished the details of relief distributed earlier,” sources added. The government had sent Rs 500 millon in advance for relief distribution to quake victims in Kavre district.

According to Bhim Pokharel, accountant at the District Administration Office, Kavre, only 21 VDCs have approached the district administration for cash relief till date. “There are 76 VDCs and five municipalities in the district while not a single municipality has submitted the details of previous relief distribution,” said Pokharel.

Earlier, 83,428 quake-affected families in the district had received Rs 15,000 each. The amount was meant for the construction of temporary shelters.

Meanwhile, in view of possible delay in distribution of cash relief meant for clothes, Nepal Red Cross Society has provided cash relief of Rs 10,000 to buy warm clothes to the victims of three VDCs in the district.
