Landslide victims demand identity cards

Taplejung, January 25

Landslide victims of Taplejung district have demanded that the local administration provide them identity cards so that they would not have to face hassles while availing of various government schemes and services.

A committee of landslide victims from various VDCs in the district yesterday submitted a memorandum to the District Administration Office, Taplejung, demanding identity cards.

The landslide victims in the district have also expressed dissatisfaction with the government for not providing them any relief.

A total of 59 people lost their lives and dozens of families were displaced by the landslides on June 10 and 11 in various VDCs of the district.

Many of the displaced are taking shelter in makeshift tents, while others are staying in their relatives’ houses.

Apart from identity cards, the landslide victims have also demanded that the local administration provide them hassle-free services.

Accusing the local administration not distributing the relief provided by the government earlier fairly, they have also demanded that the local administration investigate into alleged irregularities.

Receiving the memorandum, CDO Kamal Bahadur Thapa said the state was taking initiatives for resettlement of the victims.
