Local elections will be held soon: DPM Rawal

Bajura, April 23

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence Bhim Rawal today said local elections would be held soon.

Inaugurating the first municipal convention of CPN-UML in Badimalika Municipality of Bajura, Rawal urged party cadres to prepare for the local elections. “Development of the country is not possible unless responsibilities are given to the local bodies,” he said. He said the government had proposed amendments to the election laws to facilitate the conduct of local elections.

On a different note, DPM Rawal accused the leaders of some Madhes-based parties of disturbing harmony between the people of the hills and the Tarai.

“People should be cautious of leaders who have been disturbing peace and harmony in the name of protests,” he said, adding that the newly promulgated constitution had not discriminated against any particular group or community in the country.

“The constitution guarantees equal rights to all citizens. Moreover, some provisions of the new constitution have already been amended to address the demands of the agitating Madhes-based parties,” said Rawal.

Rawal informed that the party’s municipal council had decided to send food items to Bajura to avoid possible food crisis. “Bajura will receive food supplies within a few days,” he assured. He also assured that the government would take initiatives for construction of road linking the district with the northern border.
