Maha Samiti meet deferred

Kathmandu, November 6

A meeting of the Nepali Congress Central Working Committee today deferred the much-hyped Maha Samiti meeting to December 14-18 due to ‘lack of preparations’.

The party had earlier decided to hold the meeting in Kathmandu from November 21 to 25 to amend its statute in line with the country’s new federal set-up and electoral constituency delineation.

NC Spokesperson Bishwa Prakash Sharma said since the statute drafting committee had not finalised the draft amendment, which the CWC had to discuss and approve before going to the Maha Samiti, the meeting was postponed.

However, leaders of rival factions said the deferral of the Maha Samiti was not because of the panel’s failure to complete its work, but because of the leadership’s inability to get things done in time.

“If the party had stuck to its plan to hold its Maha Samiti on the previously-set date, we would have presented the draft amendment in today’s CWC,” said panel member Nabindra Raj Joshi.
