Police, robbers exchange fire

Nepal Police engaged in an exchange of fire with a group of armed Indian robbers the Lalbakaiya River banks in Dewahai VDC, Rautahat, Monday morning.

SP Ganesh Regmi said that one member of the group was killed.

A source at District Police Office, Rautahat, said they had received a tip-off from the Central Regional Police Office, Hetauda, that an armed group of Indian robbers had entered Nepal.

When a joint team of police personnel from the DPO and the Central Regional Police Office reached the site, the robbers had opened fire, and the police returned fire.

According to SP Regmi, the armed group had four members. The deceased was identified as Tejilal Sah, 44, of Bihar, according to police.

Sah, who received a bullet on his head, died on the spot. The body has been kept at Rautahat District Hospital.

Police Constable Surendra Chaudhary was injured by a bullet shrapnel. Chaudhary was sent to Hetuada-based Chure Hill Hospital after primary treatment at the district hospital.

Police have recovered an INSAS rifle loaded with 15 rounds of bullets, one Italian pistol, and one homemade pistol and its magazine from the incident site.

A source said that the recovered INSAS rifle is used by the Nepali Army alone in Nepal, although the Indian Army and SSB personnel in India also use the rifle.
