President Bhandari defends press freedom, asks press to be responsible

CHITWAN: President Bidya Devi Bhandari on Tuesday said that nobody can restrain the press freedom in Nepal.

Inaugurating the general convention of Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) in Ratnanagar of Chitwan today, President Bhandari emphasised the role that the fourth estate should play in Nepal's socio-economic transformation and the implementation of new constitution.

She further said that the press should follow the code of conduct to maintain its dignity, and the media fraternity should remain fair and professional.

President Bhandari asked the press to be careful about individuals' freedom and right to privacy while covering the news. "Optimum freedom can only be entertained when press act responsibly," she said.

Addressing the function, Minister for Industry Som Prasad, who is looking after the Information Minister in absence of Sarbadhan Rai, said the government plans to build up one industrial area each in all provinces and provide employment opportunities to 1 million each within 10 years.
